actually they are one in the same. the military uses the metric measurement of the round to describe it. hence 5.56 mm. when Remington made the round. they called it the .223 Remington. but they are the same round. the only real difference is that the military made round is just a little hotter and the reason for this is the primer. they wanted a primer guaranteed to fire no matter what. so if you get the AR15. it will shoot both civilian and military ammo.
so when im older I plan on getting a AR-556 it usually a 5.56mm but they make then in .223 and those round I learned are similar and I heard a rumor that they can use both is it true???
