Wicked Zombies

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

State of Emergency (now on Netflix) is a small scale zombie film that is part horror and part drama that really surprised me.  I didn't have a lot of expectations due to the mostly poor selection of zombies and horror films on Netflix, but it really delivered -- in a small, yet satisfying way.

The story follows a man who is trying to escape an unknown but deadly disaster that happens in his county.  It starts out as he trying to take care for his injured wife and follows him as he finds shelter in an abandoned horse barn.  He later links up with another group of survivors as they face down an unknown threat as they are trapped in the disaster zone.

The film masks much of what is happening in mystery, revealing the details and facts in small pieces, through flashbacks and in real time.  The action comes in small but furious splashes interspaced with moments as the survivors get to know each other and work through any pent up frustrations.

If you're looking for a big bombastic zombie movie like Dawn of the Dead or World War Z, this isn't the film for you.  This is a small stage zombie film with more time spent with the people and how they get along in their attempt to survive.  That's not to say that this is a talky drama.  There are moments of real suspense and horror.

This film obviously has a low budget, but that in no way means that it looks cheap or cheesy.  What the attempt and execute is well done. It reminded me of another low budget horror film Absentia in its look and feel.  If you can take your zombies on a small scale and want something more than the typical blood bath zombie picture, then this movie might be for you.

I am watch this TONIGHT!

Thanks for the scoop on this - it sounds cool. I just signed on with Netflix, so I'll be sure to check it out.

Let me know what you think.  Like I said, it's not a big scale zombie movie.  The filmmakers keep things contained.  I liked that.  I guess what I'm saying is that I'd rather have a small scale film that succeeds than a big blow out of zombies that comes across lame.

i watched it last night and i gotta say not bad on the whole i give it a 4 out five. it would have been a five except for three small things. one the acting should have been taken down one peg. everyone was trying to make it a little too dramatic for my taste. with the long dramatic pauses and and the moody starring. but it's just a little over acting not enough to ruin it for me. then there is a problem that plagues most of these low budget zombie movies. and thats using cg for the effects. i get they figure if were going to spend the money for video editing anyway might as well make as much as we can cg. problem is even with the biggest budget cg effects it will never look as good as a practical effect. and they only had like what five effects three blood splatters and two gun shoots. they could splash some blood on the walls for that. then i could have handled the cg gun shots. that really lowed the bar for me. and finally the ending, little two happy sun shine for me, zombie movies shouldn't end happy. now if they had left it where they cut to black and hear the gun shot after the soldiers ask him to say something. that would have been better in my book. but thats just my gripe. still good movie nice to see some more descent zombie movies on netflicks.

I would have to agree with you on the acting.  It was a little indulgent in places.

I liked the happy ending, but it did seem tacked on.
