Wicked Zombies

YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE...MAYBE TWICE!

I'm sure most of you hardcore Dawn of the Dead lovers know that they are three different versions of Romero's classic. The most popular being the 127 minute theatrical cut. The second, the 139 minute extended cut and finally, the 118 minute European cut edited by Dario Argento.

I believe all three versions have their special strengths. The theatrical cut flows amazingly well, the pacing is undeniably perfect. The European edition boasts full use of the Goblin's soundtrack which is absolutely masterful, easily one of the finest albums ever recorded.

Ultimately it is the extended version which reigns among them all in my eyes. The main characters and their motivations are fleshed out more, the longer story carries a greater level of drama and depth making the film feel even more epic. And it includes a cool little tense scene set at the port early in the picture between the four protagonists and a group of police officers led by the man Josef"Capt. Rhodes" Pilato!

Which version is your favorite?

i like the extended version because like you pointed out, the depth of the story is way better and more detailed. the theater version was good for a taste but the missing gaps always left me wanting more. i never saw the european version but being only 118 minutes, i dont think i missed much on it.
Well hell, I don't even know what version I have. I just learned all this. Thanx. Got some watchin to do.
i would love to get the ultimate edition box set. about how much does it run in stores anyway.
I would start with ebay
i tried Ebay once and got ripped off. i got a few other sources though. thanks for the recomendation though.
Damn that sucks, I have bought tons of crap off ebay, I think I may been ripped off before too though, had my account long long time
I am the dumb one here actually.
so am i. dont get me wrong here. because for me, anything George A. Romero rocks with me. but like most good scifi/horror fans, the more details the better. and the more gore, super!!! that is why i tend to favor the extended version the way i do.
I prefer the extended cut. I had the theatrical version on VHS as a youth and watched it dozens of times. So when the extended cut came around(I had it on VHS too, anchor bay put it out just before the dvd boom) I was in my glory. It has some extra gore and more scenes. The international version is very different. Some of the scenes in that one are totally different too.
i got a chance to see the extended version on DVD last night. way more awsome. i want it for my collection.
Kom Rhino, they have an ultimate edition on dvd that has all three versions and a docu-disc. Its a little pricey at $50 but its worth every single penny. Its the entire Dawn legacy in its most complete forms.

why i love dawn of the dead and i didn't know there were so many versions, now I'm gonna have to call in sick to work on Monday so i can watch them all back to back!
