Hostel is hacking and slashing its way to its 10th Anniversary

That's right komrads it's been exactly 10 years to the date that Eli Roth brought his perverse vision of over seas travel horror to audiences. A film that later went on to create its own sub horror genera, apply named Torture porn. Bringing in audiences many of whom were not ready for the spectacle to take place before there eyes. Bringing about whole new form of extreme film making in horror that at the time was unsure of its place. 

After all the film came out not long after 9/11. America was experiencing more real horror and tragedy then we had seen since Pearl Harbor and this was broadcast nonstop for weeks. Studios weren't sure the public was ready to experience anymore in their theaters. But as it turned out we were!

The story following two college students, Paxton (Jay Hernandez) and Josh (Derek Richardson), who are backpacking throughout Europe with their Icelandic friend Óli, when they decide to stay in a hostel in Slovakia after being told that there are tons of beautiful women there. Lo and behold, this is an awful idea as they are one-by-one kidnapped and taken to an abandoned factory where they find out they’ve been sold to businessmen who are intent on torturing and killing them in whatever way they see fit.

Turned out to be a huge huge success for Lionsgate. Making almost $81 million worldwide with a production cost of only $5 million paved the way for two sequels. The first of which is widely considered to be superior to the original. While the third leaves a lot to be desired.

So what do you think about looking back on 10 years of torture and what does it say that in our darkest hour we Americans turn to ultra violence like this for our entertainment?
