Geocaching
So I was thinking - Geocaching. Could it be useful in an outbreak?
Of course true geocaching is limited to those who have the means to geolocate (i.e. have some kind of GPS equipment) and would only work as long as the GPS sattelites maintain orbit. But could we take some of the core ideas of geocaching and use it to create a network of hard (i.e. pen+paper) communication points and supply sharing across the country?
My idea is this. Each "cache" would contain a list of other known caches, a logbook/diary for survivors to write down a note, and a "message board" for more multi-way communications.
Thoughts?

It would have to work on a faith system unfortunately, much like current geocaches. Nefarious persons could steal it, this is true.

How would we be able to find the cache with satellite systems down? Would we have a map of cache hiding point?
I would like to play anyway the game sounds fun.

To avoid dependency on GPS etc I'm thinking it would be more along the lines of (for america)
STATE, CITY, STREET, SPECIFIC LOCATION DESCRIPTION
the location description could be something like "In the bin in the north-east corner of the playground" or something. Also assuming lack of any form of real intelligence in the zombies we could mark the locations fairly obviously with a red flag or something.

i can understand a log book. as a licensed gun dealer. i have to keep those on any sales of purchases. its called a acquisitions and disposal log. but this GEOCACHING thing is not only flying over my head but over to the next state with me. and like you. i never heard of it either. lol.

Geocaching is an outdoor sporting activity in which the participants use a GPS receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called "geocaches" or "caches", anywhere in the world.
A typical cache is a small waterproof container containing a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers (Tupperware or similar) or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys or trinkets of little value. Geocaching is often described as a "game of high-tech hide and seek", sharing many aspects with benchmarking, trigpointing, orienteering, treasure-hunting, letterboxing, and waymarking.

if this is the case. then when the shit hits the fan. i dont see where this type of thing will help being tech stuff will be pretty much dead for all pretenses and purposes.

That was the idea behind having a list of known cache locations in each cache. If you know any that aren't on the list you add them too. The list would be a written description of the location of each cache.

okaaay. hey Toby. you do realize that the average person cant use a compass that way. the average person only knows the basic reading of a compass like NORTH, SOUTH, EAST AND WEST and not including NORTH EAST, NORTH WEST, SOUTH EAST, and SOUTH WEST. so the odds of a person being able to use this who has not had training with a lensatic compass is few to none exception of a boy scout or prior military. maybe a police officer trained in search and rescue tactics. so with this in mind. how would the average person begin to use this??

The instructions would be pretty simple like...
"London, Oxford Street, in the big skip in the alley beside Top Shop"
Like I said the caches could also be indicated with a red flag (basically any red cloth hung out) too.
I'm really thinking kind of post-apocalyptic outbreak here when most infrastructure has fallen apart. Of course how you'd get the message communicated to everyone about these caches and how to use them is a complication that I havent really figured out yet :S
