Hellhounds

Fucking Hellhounds. Class 2 Organism 1, formally. Vicious bastards. They showed up exactly ninety days after the Revenants appeared and from all accounts, they seriously fucked shit up.

They look like an insect version of a large canine, hence the name. Long, thin legs and tail, huge claws and teeth. Their heads have no eyes, nose or ears. Apparently, they hunt using thermal pits and tasting the air, like snakes. They’ve got an exoskeleton that looks like decaying scabs, but you’ll need armor piercing rounds to punch through the damned thing. My squadmates use armor piercing, explosive 12 gauge shells on them to get instant kills.

The tail is covered in tiny stingers, like a jellyfish almost. The venom in them causes extreme pain and paralysis in their prey so they can consume them. We’re partially immune to it though. Don’t get me wrong, it still hurts like hell, but it doesn’t last too long.

Hellhounds are fucking fast, faster than they look. I’ve seen them run along walls just as easy as the ground. If you see one, you’re in trouble, cuz they’re never alone. They’re extremely territorial little bastards too. Usually they avoid us because our mutation makes us look less like prey unless we’re near their lair or kills, then they’re just fucking rabid.

It’s both a good and a bad thing that they’ll eat Revenants just as fast as humans, though. While it keeps them from hunting people, it does keep them fed and lurking. A solid tactic is to boobytrap Revenant corpses with explosives to safely take them out. But it’s not always effective. We’ve found Hellhounds with their entire back half blown off chasing and eating things.

Anywhere there are a lot of Revenants, they’ll be Hellhounds nearby. They hunt in both daylight and night and are clever enough to find ways into buildings and other structures.

Hellhounds aren’t visible under thermal vision, their exoskeletons mask their signature, so keep that in mind.
